An aerial view of Dr. Bemis and his students studying the most unusual fish from the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
One of the reasons the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is such a unique research venue for Dr. Bemis is because of the "Most Unusual" category. The prize in the this category has nothing to do with size and everything to do weirdness. At the end of the event, all of the bizarre fish entered in the "Most Unusual" category are given to Dr. Bemis who lays them out on a dissecting table and goes over the anatomy and characteristics of each fish with his students.
The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, one of the premier fishing events in America, runs from July 16 thru July 18, 1999. Throughout this three day event, over 2,700 fishermen converge on Daulphin Island, AL to compete for $170,000 in cash and prizes. Over 50,000 spectators are on hand to watch fishermen bring in a vast array of exotic fish from the Gulf of Mexico.
